Big Sandy SWCD is excellent in providing environmental educational activities that strive to meet SOL requirements and MWEE (Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience) for students in K-12 schools in Buchanan County.
We partner with several agencies to provide programs such as Kids-N-Woods, which allows students to learn about forest ecosystems, conservation, and recycling.
Our annual Groundwater Festival teaches kids about the benefits of taking care of our Natural Resources. Such as keeping our water resources like rivers, lakes, and streams clean by preventing pollution or littering. Teaching how to maintain healthy soils, and grow crops that reduce erosion loss. Preserving the forests by only harvesting what we need and replanting trees for the future.
We also promote The Virginia Envirothon, a team-based natural resources competition for high school students. Students will learn stewardship and management concepts that help solve real-world environmental problems. The program is field-oriented, and community-based and allows students to work with natural resource professionals.
With multiple programs, Big Sandy SWCD provides activities that allow students to be interactive, mindful, and informed of the ecosystem.
