Erosion & Sediment Control Program – Buchanan County
The Big Sandy Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) administers the Local Erosion and Sediment Control (ESC) Program for Buchanan County through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Buchanan County Board of Supervisors.
Our team is responsible for providing administrative oversight, plan review, and on-site inspection services to ensure compliance with local and state regulations aimed at preventing erosion and sediment runoff into rivers, streams, and creeks throughout the county.
In accordance with Virginia state law, any land-disturbing activity exceeding 10,000 square feet requires an approved Erosion and Sediment Control Plan. For single-family home construction projects where grading exceeds 10,000 square feet, an “Agreement in Lieu of a Plan” may be submitted in place of a formal ESC plan.
Big Sandy SWCD staff collaborate with local engineers, contractors, and property owners to guide them through the ESC plan approval process and secure the necessary permits for land-disturbing activities.
